WIM Project Status Report
Accomplished tasks:
- Created
a single room VE with several objects (table, ball, etc.) in it to provide
us with a testing model for the initial stages of WIM development.
- Managed
to create a miniature representation of the “big” virtual world and place
it in the VE by attaching it to an empty object we named “WIM” and making WIM
a child to any object. In the head mounted display WIM will be attached to
the tracker of the left hand therefore allowing it to be removed from the
view and brought back as needed. We feel that having WIM attached to the
left hand (or right hand for left-handed individuals) will provide an
intuitive map-like interface for WIM.
- Since
we want to implement WIM for any generic world, not only specially
prepared worlds, we have to account for outside walls on the room. We
started doing work on removing the outside faces of the room, however
several difficulties were introduced and we were unable to finish that
process by this progress report.
- We
have also started the work on having the miniature world mimic the
orientation of the real world by realigning every frame with the users view of the world. This work is not yet completely
finished.
- We
compiled the demo of the work accomplished so far.
Work that still needs to be done:
- Complete
the front face removal process.
- Complete
the realigning process.
- Add
support for WIM object manipulation and concurrency between the WIM and
the “outside” VE
- Add
the support for multiple rooms (and possible multiple levels/floors).
- Add a
voodoo doll representation of the user in the WIM for easier manipulation.
ŕ We would like to demo our project on Thursday 4/5/01 at 3:30 pm.
The difficulties, which we encountered in making the initial
WIM model, slowed our progress significantly. We believe that we have
overestimated our goals in the project proposal and we are unsure if we will be
able to complete all the intended functionality by the final deadline. We are
hoping that once these initial difficulties are resolved our progress will
advance at a higher rate.
