Barcelona is cool. While we were wandering around during the day we say a bunch of street performers that were spray painted to look like statues, which was really cool, and some of them were really good at pretending, too. I didn't even realize the first one was a person until I looked again.

We went down an alley, and there were just so many people everywhere. We ate at a "travel bar," geared towards our crowd I guess, and out in the plaza where the outdoor seating was, several people just showed up and started playing music. The first guy came and had an amp, and actually sounded pretty good. He didn't sing, but we gave him a little money. The second guy showed up a little later and played REM and a couple other songs really badly. We didn't want to give him money, but Jim gave him 25 pesetas I think, which works out to about 12.5 cents? Anyway, the third guy showed up, and whips out a eukelalie and unpacks stuff from his dog (!) and starts singing really well. He was awesome, and said he was called the EuMan, had a CD for sale, etc. A class above the other guy. It was a neat afternoon.

We ended up wasting most of our time after that trying to find out where our bags were and waiting for them, which sucked, cause we wanted to go the beach, but we finally got them at 5pm. We went to the beach and just hung out for a bit, came back, got some showers, some dinner, and went out on the town.

We had a bunch of Sangria, which varies extremely widely between the different places that make it, and some Estrella Damm beer, which we started calling "Daaaamn," cause it's funny. We found this little plaza off La Ramblas, which is the main street we're staying on, and they had the "largo" beers which were 1L and _huge_! Jeremy got some beer at McDonald's just for the novelty, and we just hung out in the room after that.

This morning we woke up and Jim and Aurora decided they just had to go on the Barcelona bus tour, so Jer, Andy, and I went to the beach again, and we were there for about 5 hours, had dinner, and were heading back on the subway after not meeting them when they thought they'd be back, and who'd over in the next subway car, but Thome (Jim)! What are the chanced of that. So we just came back, and I came over here to see if I could get some pictures up on this site.

Today just sucked. My camera broke the first day, so I bought a new one today, which was an up part, but my Visor had to be hard-reset, so I lost everything I had on it; I was just bummed.

We didn't sleep last night cause our flight was at 6, and then we had 6 hours in the airport, where I did actually get some sleep, and then we got here to Barcelona, but our bags were still in London. Great.

The only other up-point was that we met a girl on the downtown bus, Aurora, from Colorado, that knew of a hostel to stay at, cause all the ones we called were booked, and we got a room. Also, we just went out to dinner, and the exchange rate is 200:1 here, so the bill was 11813 pesatos!
Hopefully we'll get our luggage tonight, but most probably tomorrow -- at least I have some pictures again!

Well, we had quite an interesting couple of days -- the official title of our last several days is "Stir Crazy" (from car travel). We didn't see any internet places on the way, which is why this waited until today.

Two days ago, we got up in the Abbey Hostel where we were staying and had our "breakfast" of toast and jam [there's quite a bit of false advertising around here :)] and headed out in out toyota corolla to see Dingle, Ireland. We stopped at the town of Kilkenny and had some lunch, walked around a bit, and toured Kilkenny Castle. It wasn't that great of a tour, as most of the items from the castle has been sold off in the 30's and they have been restoring the castle and buying things back since 1992, but it provided much humour (!) to our conversations over the last couple of days. It was really an amazing view from the castle, just so much space.

That leg of the trip was 1.5 hours, and then it took another _four and a half_ to get to Dingle. The roads were small and windy, but the scenery was some of the most amazing ever. We were almost there, and the sun was behind some clouds, and the dingle peninsula was ahead of us; we had the mountains, the valley, the ocean, and all the sheep and cows down there, the sun was shining on everything; I can't even describe what it was like. We took some pictures, but they'll no doubt come nowhere near to doing the scene justice.

So we get near Dingle, and we found a "haunted" hostel, it was really just a little local legend, but we went and got some wine and just hung out in the courtyard with Andy's guitar and he and Jeremy played songs and we just chilled. There was a tour bus staying there also, so lots of people our age, and they had a local musician coming to play songs, and he invited us in to play and sing, etc.

It turned out to be a really awesome evening, and we weren't sure if we wanted to head up to Galway for yesterday. We decided to see what Galway was like, as we heard from "the book" (Go Europe, 2001 edition) that it was a pretty cool college-town.

It took another 4 hours of driving to get there - we went through Limerick - and we had to go to three different hostels before we found one with room. We went drinking, and had a good time. It's really funny, because the guy running the hostel seemed just weird, he just barged into the room at 9:45 and said it was time to checkout, and Jeremy's like.. "10:00, right?" and the he just said "time to checkout!" We even did some laundry, and he didn't seem to remember us when we came back for it, on more than one occasion. Weird.

We had breakfast this morning in just a little hole-in-the-wall place that we stopped at randomly, and Jim is wearing his Michigan shirt, and the waitress asks if they went there. Turns out she did, and she is working in Ireland for the summer, and I think she and Jeremy even knew some of the same friends. It's amazing when stuff like that happens.

So we're going back to Dublin right now, about 1.5 hours in, and we've probably got an hour left before we get there. It's pretty odd how the roadsigns all have MPH, but distances are in KM. And gas is sold in Litres.

Anyway, we have to get on a flight back to London at 6 in the morning and then we're going to Barcelona at 2 in the afternoon.

Last night was so much fun, we went to this really neat pub and I found Kilkenny's, a really neat bear that looks like Guiness, but doesn't taste like coffee. We saw some Irish dancers, one of which became known as "Irish Dancing Girl", and we went to several other pubs until they closed at half past 12. We went to a club afterward and danced till almost 3 in the morning.

Today we just walked around Dublin and saw a couple of churches and were not impressed by the castle. Hopefully tomorrow we'll see Trinity College, get my camera fixed, and go travel in the countryside. And tonight'll be fun too!

Update [2001-06-12]

Dancing was pretty fun last night, Jeremy was dancing with a girl that we think was just using him to get back at her boyfriend, but hey, it's all good for him! :)

Jeremy, Jim, and I walked around to see the cathedrals/castle today, and Andy went shopping and to get a haircut. It ended up raining hard-core, and we took shelter under the overhang of a bank. I saw a beggar sitting on a bridge with just a cup and a blanket, and when we passed by a couple of hours later, I saw him with his clothes on packing up a bag and leaving the bridge! I couldn't believe that he just sat there looking pathetic when he was just scamming.

We saw the Christ Church Cathedral in London, which was pretty neat; they had a crypt underneath that was just a huge room with arches. Jeremy and I talked about how it separated the space without having walls, like there were lots of little sub-rooms. There were lots of people buried there, probably because their families were rich, and we noticed that also when we were in St. Patrick's Cathedral after that; just being rich got a plaque or statue that millions of people would see and would probably be there as long as the building stood.

We walked around alot, tried to find a camera shop that knew how to fix my camera--noone did, so we gave up and I figured I'd just scan their pictures of the countryside.

Hello from Ireland! This place is definitely cooler than London, although I was there only one night. We flew here from Hearthrow, which was an extremely short flight, and rented a car for $25 a day. And it's a stick. Which Jeremy thought he could drive.

So we decided to switch when he'd decided that having to drive stick, on the wrong side of the road, in Ireland, was too much for him. We found a hostel and went to an Irish pub, and they had Guiness and I had some Kilkenny's; and even with the "mad cow" scare, we had some authentic corned beef and cabbage.

I would have posted some awesome pictures, especially of my ticket to London, which says "World Traveler" (my seating class) on it, but that'll have to wait until I somehow fix my camera that fell and now doesn't recognize any memory. D'oh.

Off to explore more of Dublin, hopefully some pictures will be forthcoming shortly, and the stupid bizaargraphics.com domain will start working again.

Update [2001-06-12]

Jeremy, Jim, and Andy took the tube to come get me at the hostel, thus I was waiting for them for an hour and a half while the tube took it's time getting there. They didn't think that it'd take longer than the train they had taken out of the airport on Saturday when they arrived.

We stayed at a hostel in london, which apparently was on the bad side of town, according to our mini-cab driver, and the room was incredibly small - the door barely opened without hitting the beds. Also, my camera fell off one of the beds and broke, but that wasn't good.

We were hungry when we got to the hostel, so we went out looking for food, but (apparently) London closes down after 11, so the only things open were McD's, Burger King (which they'd already had the night before), Chicken Village, and Royal Pizza. We opted for the pizza.

So London sucked, and I just happened to wake everyone up a little early to make the flight, so we were in the airport, reluctantly eating a little BK, and I glanced at the ticket to see what time we had to board the flight - 10.25. Guess what time it was? 10.25. Mad dash ensues.

It was indeed a really short flight, and Jeremy and I talked to the Irish woman in our row for a bit; he asked her if she'd ever had haggis or played golf (she said those were scottish).

We decided over a pint in the Dublin Airport that we'd rent a car for the week, as we wanted to travel around the country, and a gentleman at the counter said it'd only be 25 pounds a day, about 27 bucks. Also, we asked some people at the bar, and they said you "only tip if you fancy her!" so we had a good laugh at that.

Finally, we had the car, and I had taken over the driving, and we checked into the Abby Hostel for 20pds, which included "breakfast" (toast+coffee).

The pub we ate at was the Oliver St. John Gogarty in the "Temple Bar" area, across the street from the hostel, where we ended up going most of the time, cause it was so fun. They had authentic Irish Folk Music, which it turns out most places had around there, and it was just a really neat place to sit back and take in.
